Flower Petal Dyeing Kit with Kiddos
/The kit was kindly gifted by Wilden London who thought of me and the girls during half term as it can be tricky to think of things to do! Charlotte didn’t ask me to share any pictures nor a (kind of) review but we had so much fun with it that I needed to put it somewhere more permanent than my Instagram
All images and words as always are mine! I really hope you enjoy them.
So, half term for us is a time to say goodbye to the routine, just take it slow and as easy as possible. I usually try and fit in a few special things; this half term it was having a den downstairs and choosing their favourite movies to watch with popcorn and lunch, a trip to the museum, pizza at our local place called Poli one evening and of course the beautiful petal dyeing kit.
You know how certain music will set the mood at a beginning of a movie? Well this package with all its gorgeous and sensory materials set the mood for them to ask questions about magic and nature!
Zora and Dalia loved the soft silk and gently stroked it, commenting on the way it shimmered. As I unfolded the fabric they gasped and shouted happily at the sight of the three bulbous little packages inside. Little petals were strewn around so they picked them up, inspecting and smelling and pinching between their little fingers. We found a partial butterfly wing and perfect little pansy too.
The little folded brown bags contained more flower petals but the keys and thread they were tied with piqued the girls’ curiosity ! Asking questions about what kind of doors the keys would open and who would live there. (As a partially trained primary school teacher I was thinking of how amazingly well this could work as a spring board for topics from English to Science to Art!)
They were both dumbfounded when they learnt that the paper with the instructions could be planted too! All the details made for a magical start to our little half term project.
I won’t be running down a step by step for the process but it is super simple. I had a make shift steamer with a colander than didn’t quite fit over a pan of water but it still worked brilliantly! I usually let little things like that stop me from pursuing projects like this but I’m so glad I didn’t this time!
We all loved sprinkling the petals over the fabric, rolling it up like little sausages as Dalia remarked! And then we watched a movie while we waited for the steam and petals to do its magic!
They’ve been so patient and as per the instructions they’ve left their wings in a little box so the colours won’t fade. We now can’t wait for a springtime woodland frolic with the fairies!
